Preparing your Sitemap

The sitemap is an outline of the content on your website and includes the topics you want listed in the main menu and the topics to include under the main menu in your sub-menu.

  • The top level is the most important to get right. Depending on the final website design, it can sometimes be difficult to add or change wording after the website is built. However, the rest of the navigation is extremely easy to change after the website is built.
  • Try to categorize the top-level into as few topics as possible. Four would be ideal, but you could go to six.
  • Think about what your visitors are looking for – that is where your focus should be.
  • Order the top level by importance of your visitors’ needs, from left to right.
  • Use "action" words for the top-level items if possible (e.g. Join, Explore, Attend).
  • The simpler the better. One word titles are great. Visitors should not need to work at figuring things out. They should just be able to scan the menus to find what they need.
  • Keep the titles as short, specific, and straight-forward as possible.
  • Your Sitemap should include every page that you want on the site
    • You can have more then ten (10) pages listed in your sitemap
      • We will insert the content for up to 10 pages that you provide the content for
      • You will be able to insert the content for any pages beyond this
    • Format your sitemap as a bulleted list as shown below.
    • Send your list in a Word document named "Sitemap"

Preparing your content

Up to 10 pages of website content will be entered and formatted by Membee. Please keep track of all changes and additions made to your content after it’s been submitted to Membee. You will be able to make them to the new website after your training as well as add in additional content if you have more then ten (10) pages in your sitemap

To be able to upload your content into your site, we required the following formats:

  • Microsoft word format.
  • One Word document per website section, with each new page starting on a new page in the Word document.
  • Page titles, section and subsection headers clearly identified in content.
  • Any images that need to be included on the page must be indicated using the format
    <insert image - filename.gif>
  • Any PDF files that you may wish to include a download for must be referenced in the content using the following format: <insert PDF link - filename.pdf>
  • Any links in the content should be either formatted as a hyperlink OR identified as a link by surrounding the text that will be linked as follows:
    • At the beginning of the word(s) to be linked <start link>
    • At the end of the linked word(s) <end link>
    • For example - <start link>http://www.google.com<end link>
  • Clearly label any optional meta data and alt tags that should be included.
  • All content should be spell-checked and grammar checked prior to sending to Membee for entry and formatting. Membee’s team will not provide any content editing services, although we will endeavor to correct any obvious errors that we see and point out other items that may be errors for comment.
  • Please zip all content, images, and files into one zip file and send to support@membee.com
